Speak their Name quilts on display in Romsey Abbey

The Hampshire and IOW Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt will be on display in Romsey Abbey from 11 May until 1 June.

There are three quilts, made up of squares which have been made by relatives and friends of those who have tragically taken their own lives.  The exhibition also includes the stories written about each square.

Beeb Deacon who is one of the founders of the Hampshire Quilt says “Suicide loss is traumatic, heartbreaking and can be isolating and stigmatising. We wanted to bring some care and healing to those who have lost a loved one and also to bring hope and awareness to those who might be struggling”.

The installation of the quilts was marked with a prayer and blessing by the Revd Sally Womersley, Associate Priest. The quilts can be visited during Abbey visitor hours, 10.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm. There will be information available signposting to sources of local and national support.

The Vicar of Romsey, the Reverend Canon Thomas Wharton, has welcomed the opportunity for the quilts to be on display within the Abbey. Canon Wharton said: “I hope many people will come and view the quilts. The Abbey has long been committed to providing information and support to those struggling with their mental health via the charity Triangulate which is based at the Abbey and provides information and resources for our community and visitors.”
